Practice Entry: All About Blogs

Here we are and welcome to a new start. That's what New Game+ is all about: starting up and starting over when things change around us.

To start this all off, we're going to talk about blogs; this blog and some others, as we consider which way we are going. This isn't my first blog. I've had several over the years, though not recently. I don't personally love the format. I find it difficult to maintain the content schedule, but we're gonna give it a good run. That being said, I do think they are a great format for gathering and reporting information. Especially if you consider how many web pages that are in a blog format that you might not have thought of. Billboard, Entrepreneur, and Harvard Business Review are a few that come to mind.

So, let's take a look at a couple blogs to see what works for us and what doesn't:

Hollywoodlife is a fairly popular blog that talks a lot about celebrity lives and gossip, and a little bit of politics. It's definitely on the short list of blogs I'm not a fan of. I don't love the content to begin with, but the layout is rather bland. The landing page is a cluster of tiles but as you scroll, the page just becomes an endless stream of one article banner after another. It's more like a Rolodex than a web page. It's simple enough to navigate which is appropriate for it's intent as an entertainment blog, but it feels lacking in depth or any inter-connectivity. Also, and this is just a me thing, I hate the color.

TechCrunch is another high traffic blog. This one is a little more my speed. They focus more on tech and and business related matters. They've also formatted their page to feel more developed. Each article connects with similar pages, so you can read deeper into a subject. The pages as a whole do feel more busy, but they're structured in a way that feels like a new page every time I scroll. I don't love the persistent banners in some places. But that's true about any site, not just blogs.

Unfortunately we're not going to have the time or resources to make this page have the flair either of these blogs have, but I know which way we're gonna lean with what we do have. I'm looking forward to seeing what we come across and come up with as this page develops. Maybe this will turn out to be something bigger than I initially thought.
